A brief history of Hewitt & Whitty Pty Ltd

John Hewitt (Accountant) and Jack Whitty (Farm Machinery Salesman), both returned servicemen, formed a partnership with their wives and started trading on the 4th of July 1938.

The first shop was rented from SJ Weir builders, and located at 15a Doveton St Nth, where the Mid City Motel is now situated.

The agency for HV McKay Massey Harris farm equipment was the main source of income. Jack Whitty, at the time of forming Hewitt and Whitty, worked for HV McKay Massey Harris as their Ballarat and district representative.

In 1951, Hewitt and Whitty purchased much larger premises across the road at 24 Doveton St Nth, from the Victorian Wheatgrowers Corporation. John Hewitt’s son Bill, joined Hewitt and Whitty in the same year. Bill’s two sons joined the business, Greg in July 1976 and Peter in June 1981, and they are still actively involved today.

The official opening of the current shop, built on the corner of Carngham Rd and Wiltshire Lane, was held exactly 50 years after Hewitt and Whitty commenced trading, on the 4th of July 1988.

It is worth noting that Hewitt and Whitty still continue to offer sales and service of capital equipment as well as stocking a large selection of general farm supplies.
